Episode 105: 5th March 2020

Mixing things up this week with Christina Foyle, Professor Sir Cary Cooper, Barbara Sher, writing a book and, of course, Coronavirus.

There’s nothing we like more at The Business Community  than a good book and we have, both, on occasion considered writing a book. Maybe you’ve had the same idea but not ‘got round’ to taking action. We discuss our options and consider whether to delay-no-more or give up all hope of becoming a published author and stick to reading the work of others.

Max Tucker shares his opinions on why writing a book is a bad idea and depending on whether or not you agree with him this article by Victor Prince tells you how to write a book in eight simple stages.

In other news the Coronavirus gets a name check and Health & Safety specialists IHASCO shares guidance on their blog. Norway features once again with regard to their green aims and credentials and on a brighter note comedian Joe Lycett changes his name to Hugo Boss.

Heather gets over excited about her discovery of the week having recently bagged herself front row seats at a lecture by Professor Sir Cary Cooper. Please see Episode 95 to find out why we like him so much. The lecture was on the hot topic of workplace well being and Sir Cary shared his wealth of knowledge and experience.  You can find out more about his work at Robertson Cooper.

Tracy revisited a particular favourite author of hers, Barbara Sher author of How To Get What You Want (Even If You Have No Goals, No Character and Are Often In A Lousy Mood) and TedEx speaker.

And finally, sticking with the bookish theme we take a look at the story of Christina Foyle the daughter of the founder of Foyles books who drove the business forward during her tenure amongst high society ideals and the birth of Waterstones. It makes for an interesting story and demonstrates that even when your competitor sets up shop next to you it doesn’t mean the end of your business, if you keep ahead of the game.
